How to Dispute an Error on Your TransUnion Credit Report

TransUnion's online portal requires an account first — mail skips that entirely. Here's how to file either way, and what happens next.

TransUnion's dispute process follows the same federal rules as the other two bureaus, but its online system works a little differently — worth knowing before you pick a method.

Filing online

TransUnion handles disputes through its own portal at dispute.transunion.com, which requires creating or signing into a TransUnion account first. That account requirement trips some people up, and the free-text field for explaining your dispute is fairly short. It's a fine option for a simple, clear-cut error, but not the best fit if you need to attach documentation or lay out a longer explanation.

Filing by mail

A mailed letter skips the account requirement entirely and gives you space to fully explain the error and attach supporting documents. Send it certified with return receipt requested to:

TransUnion Consumer Solutions
P.O. Box 2000
Chester, PA 19016

Include your full name, current address, date of birth, and the specific account and error — the more precisely you describe what's wrong, the easier it is for TransUnion to investigate quickly.

Filing by phone

TransUnion's consumer line is 1-800-916-8800. As with the other bureaus, a phone dispute doesn't leave you a written record of the conversation, so it's best used for straightforward issues rather than anything you may need to reference later.

What to expect afterward

TransUnion has 30 days to investigate (45 if you submit more information during the process). The item's furnisher — the creditor or collector who reported it — has to verify it's accurate. If they can't, TransUnion is required to correct or remove it, and you'll get the results in writing along with an updated report if anything changed.
