How to Dispute an Error on Your Equifax Credit Report

Equifax's dispute process has a few quirks of its own, including an upsell you can skip. Here's the mailing address, phone number, and what to expect.

An error on your Equifax report gets fixed the same way as with any bureau — a formal dispute citing your rights under the Fair Credit Reporting Act — but Equifax's own process has a few quirks worth knowing before you start.

Filing online

Equifax runs its disputes through its own site (equifax.com) or a myEquifax account. During that flow, Equifax will typically offer a paid credit monitoring product — it's an upsell, not a requirement, and you can decline it and continue straight to filing your dispute for free. The online form works well for clear-cut errors but gives limited room for a detailed explanation or attachments.

Filing by mail

For anything that needs documentation — a payoff letter, a bankruptcy discharge notice, proof of identity theft — mail is the more reliable route. Send it certified with return receipt requested to:

Equifax Information Services LLC
P.O. Box 740256
Atlanta, GA 30374

State your full name, current and previous address, the account in question, and exactly what's wrong with it. Attach copies (never originals) of anything that backs up your claim.

Filing by phone

Equifax's consumer line is 1-866-349-5191. Like the other bureaus, phone disputes don't leave you a written record of what was said, so they're best reserved for straightforward corrections rather than anything you might need to follow up on later.

The 30-day clock

Once your dispute is received, Equifax has 30 days to investigate (45 if you add information mid-process). They pass it to whoever reported the item, who must verify its accuracy. If they can't, the FCRA requires Equifax to correct or delete it — and send you the results in writing, along with a free updated report if the outcome changed anything.
